Nestled in the heart of downtown Mankato and North Mankato, the Mankato Sculpture Walk is a shining example of how art can transform a community. Since its inception in 2011, this annual outdoor exhibit has brought life, culture, and creativity to the streets, making it a beloved feature for residents and visitors alike. Let’s take a walk through the fascinating history and highlights of this must-see Mankato landmark.

A Vision for Public Art

The Mankato Sculpture Walk began as a public art initiative with a clear mission: to enhance the cultural landscape of the area while encouraging community interaction. Over the years, it has grown into one of the largest and most engaging art displays in southern Minnesota, drawing attention to downtown’s beauty and vibrancy.

Each year, artists from across the country submit their work in hopes of being featured. The selected sculptures are displayed for one year, ensuring that the exhibit remains dynamic and fresh. From whimsical creations to thought-provoking installations, the Sculpture Walk offers something for everyone.

My Personal Favorites

One of my absolute favorites from the Sculpture Walk is “Stand for the Flag” by Lee Leuning & Sherri Treeby (2016). This extraordinary piece depicts a Vietnam Veteran standing and saluting the American flag as the parade honor guard approaches. It’s a powerful and moving tribute to patriotism, sacrifice, and the values that unite us as a community. For me, “Stand for the Flag” serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and a celebration of their courage.

Another standout for me is “We Can Do It” by Lee Leuning & Sherri Treeby (2016). Inspired by the iconic Rosie the Riveter poster, this vibrant and empowering piece celebrates strength and determination. Constructed from recycled metals, it radiates badass girl power and serves as a bold tribute to resilience and the unstoppable spirit of women. It’s an inspiring visual reminder of the power of perseverance.
