Nestled just minutes from downtown Mankato, Mount Kato Ski Area is a local gem that offers year-round recreation and stunning views of the Minnesota River Valley. Whether you’re a snow enthusiast or an outdoor adventurer, this landmark has something for everyone. Here’s a closer look at the history, offerings, and fun facts about Mount Kato.
A History of Outdoor Adventure
The history of skiing in the Mankato area dates back to the early 20th century. In the 1940s, Ski Haven was established on what was originally known as Andersen's Hill by Harvey and Dolly Andersen. Early on, Ski Haven featured five graduated jumps, with the largest reaching 125 feet. It also included a toboggan run and sledding. The first lift, a tow rope, was built in 1945 using a Buick engine and hemp rope. The first chalet, a log cabin constructed with telephone poles, was completed in 1952. Ski Haven's second lift was installed in 1954.
Harvey Andersen maintained the equipment and entertained guests with his storytelling, ocarina and harmonica playing, and yodeling, creating a welcoming and memorable atmosphere. Despite their passion, the Andersens found that running Ski Haven was challenging, as weather conditions often limited the ski season to just 12 to 13 weeks.
To meet the growing demand for ski equipment, their son Jim opened Jim's Sporting Goods Store in 1964, further supporting the local skiing community.
Today, Mount Kato has evolved from its Ski Haven roots and is now owned and operated by a dedicated local team, maintaining the area’s rich history while offering modern amenities and activities.
